Planning and design
First, we planned the structure, the user flows and an interface that stays simple despite the security underneath.

WhisFai is a privacy-focused messaging app for Android and iPhone. It encrypts every message on your phone before it leaves. You add friends by meeting them in person, and you never need a phone number. We built the first version in one month.
Most messaging apps start with your phone number and a public directory. So anyone can find you, and the server knows more than it needs to. WhisFai had to work the other way around.
Signing up with a phone number means strangers, spam and data brokers can reach you.
Two people in the same room still had to type usernames to connect, and they often typed them wrong.
Without a way to verify a contact in person, an account can be anyone.
Private chats, calls and file sharing lived in different apps, so privacy ended at the chat window.
We built a privacy-focused messaging app where trust starts in person. Two people meet and find each other over Bluetooth. Then they scan each other's code, and both phones show the same 60-digit safety number. From then on, the phones seal every message between them.
The phone encrypts every one-to-one message before it leaves, each with its own key. Our servers only ever see ciphertext.
People in the same room find each other over Bluetooth, so nobody types a username by mistake.
Both people scan a code, and both phones then show the same 60-digit safety number. No key travels over Bluetooth or inside the code.
Voice and video calls over encrypted connections, group chats and a Contact Vault, all inside the same private messenger.
We planned the flows in week one and built messaging and discovery in week two. Then we added verification and calls, and finally tested until release.
First, we planned the structure, the user flows and an interface that stays simple despite the security underneath.
Core messaging, accounts without phone numbers, and Bluetooth discovery of people nearby.
QR verification with the shared safety number, then voice and video calls through the encrypted call servers.
Finally, we tested every flow on both platforms and shipped the app to Google Play and the App Store.
The WhisFai app is live on Google Play and the App Store, and the same account also opens WhisFai Meet in the browser. The app encrypts every one-to-one message on the device with an open-source Olm session, so the servers only ever store ciphertext. A username and a password are enough to start.
